Boxer Cindy Ngamba emerges with bronze after semifinal loss, first ever medal for Olympic refugee team

Her name is Cindy Ngamba and she is the first-ever medalist for the Olympic refugee team. Ngamba lost in the semifinal bout of the women’s 75-kilogram boxing competition against Panama’s Atheyna Bylon. Despite dropping the first round, Ngamba came back in the second, earning four of the five judges’ votes. Bylon regained the edge in the third round, but a point deduction favored Ngamba. Bylon will fight China’s Qian Li for gold, while Ngamba secured bronze. Ngamba moved from Cameroon to England at 11 due to being gay and cannot return home. She trains with Great Britain boxing and competes under the refugee flag.
